Sarva Vahanothsava
This Uthsava is held in either the Second or Third Sunday of September every year. This is a unique and rare occasion wherein the Lord Kalyana Narasimha is decorated on 8 different Vahanas one after the other and a procession is taken out each time thro the temple neighborhood. The day is divided into two sessions, in the morning session the Lord proceeds in the following four Vahanas:
- SuryaPrabhe Uthsava
- Hamsavahana Uthsava
- Hanumanthavahana Uthsava
- Garudavahana Uthsava
This is followed by a break wherein devotees partake of Divya Prasada which is served to one and all by the volunteers. This is followed by the afternoon session which consists of the Lord astride the following four Vahanas:
- Gajavahana Uthsava
- Ashwavahana Uthsava
- Seshavahana Uthsava
- Prahallada Paripalana Uthsava (Narasimha Avatara)
The last mentioned Uthsava is unique only to this temple at present.
As the name suggests Narasimhavathara is depicted through a small drama. A model pillar is kept at the thresh hold of the Rajadwara (Main Entrance). This pillar is burst open to reveal the Lord Kalyana Narasimha in full splendor and in the act of slaying the Rakshasa, Hirayanyakashapu. The sight of thousands of people waiting in anticipation of the Lord and chanting his name upon sighting HIM is to be seen and experienced to be believed. The Lord then goes out on an Uthsava around the temple neighbourhood seated on his 'Golden Pallaki'.
Narasimha Jayanthi
A special abhisheka is held to the Lord on this day which occurs during the Hindu calendar of Vaishaka ( April-May) during the Swathi Nakshatra ascendancy phase, and people throng to the temple in thousands to have a darshana of the Lord. This is followed by 5 days of music concerts in the evening wherein a mix of local talent and world renowned musicians perform before the Lord.
Jyeshtabhisheka
This Uthsava is held during the Hindu month of Jyeshta wherein the Lord is bathed in 108 kalashas of holy water, water that is mixed with cardamom, camphor and medicinal herbs. The 108 kalashas signify the Ashtothara names of Lord Vishnu. At the end of the abhisheka a maha Kumbha containing holy water is taken around the sanctum sanctorum before the Lord is bathed with it.
Uyaalothsava
During the Hindu month of Ashada, the Lord mounts the silver swing for five days. It is believed that the strong breeze during this month swings the Lord while he is seated.
Aadi Maasa Uthsavas
During the Hindu month of Aadi, an Uthsava is held every Friday evening wherein Amruthavalli Thayar is taken around in a Uthsava procession
Sarva Vadhyothsava
A week after Sarvavahanothsava, an ensemble of about 120 musicians come together and perform compositions dedicated to the Lord while he goes about in an Uthsava around the temple neighbourhood.
Navarathri Uthsava
The Hindu festival of Navarathri is celebrated at Sri LakshmiNarasimha Temple by decorating the Lord in the NavaNarasimha alankara (nine different alankaras on nine days). The culmination of this is on the day of Vijayadashami, wherein according to the Mahabharatha, the Pandavas worshipped their hidden cache of weapons on the end of their Agnyatha vaasa. On this day, Banni leaves are distributed among the devotees assembled.
Deepavali Uthsava
Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated in grand style with an Uthsavam of the Lord in full splendour followed by a Grand display of Fireworks, signifying the triumph of good over evil.
Pavithrothsava
Pavithr in Sanskrit means Pure. This Uthsava is held to purify the temple from all the sins and impurities left behind by devotees in the temple as also to purify any omissions and commissions done inadvertently during the course of the year. This Uthsava consists of threads made of Silk and Cotton, known as Pavithras, donned to all the deities in the temple and to some vital places in the temple premises. These Pavithras are removed after the cleansing rituals are complete.
Hanuma Jayanthi
Hanuma Jayanthi is celebrated with a grand abhisheka to Lord Hanumantha after which HE is decorated in a grand décor.
Vishnu Deepothsava
Thousands of devotees come together to celebrate Vishnu Deeptothsava by lighting lamps inside the temple Prakara. A cloth dipped in Ghee is burnt and the resulting Ash (Rakshe) is anointed on the Lord to destroy all the evil spirits.
Dhanurmasa activities
During this month, an Upanyasa (discourse) is arranged and the topic is Tirupaavai (the story of Andal and HER wedding with Lord Rangamannar). Vaikunta Ekadashi and Koodarai Vellum are also held during this month. Due to the fact that the temple programs start very early in the mornings during this month, the temple timings stand revised to: 5.00AM – 10.00 AM and 6.00 PM – 8.00 PM.
Vaikunta Ekadashi
Vaikunta Ekadashi occurs during the Hindu calendar month of Magha (corresponding to late December-January in the English Calendar). It is believed that Vaikunta Dhwara or the Gate to Lord’s Inner Sanctum is opened on this day, and hence any one who visits the temple and passes through this Dwara attains Moksha (Salvation). The temple is open all through this day and devotees stream in the thousands to have darshana of the Lord. On this day, the Lord is decorated in a special Gold Kavacha.
Koodarai Vellum
Andal wished to get married to Lord Rangamannar, she attains Moksha while performing penance to fulfill that oath. To complete this wish of Andal, Shri Ramajunachariar performs a puja on her behalf. To signify this, on the 27th Day of Dhanurmasa, a special puja is held at the temple, people desirous of attaining matrimonial status can obtain the same by participating in this puja.
Kanu Uthsava
On this day Sreedevi and Bhoodevi Thayar go in an Uthsava to their’s mother’s place. The lady devotees offer Kanu (Rice mixed with Turmeric, Kumkum, Sugarcane, Til and a seasonal fruit called Yelachi Hannu) in the temple.
In addition to the above mentioned programmes, some of the other major festivals are also celebrated with fervour. Among them are:
